Val Garay's Tracked Drums
WireonFire Home

The sound of the drums and the way they are laid out in Pro Tools session format make this the most practical and best sounding aid to programming and creating believable drum tracks that I have seen on the market to date.

Review..

Some of you may have heard of Discrete Drums; it's a multi disc, multi-tempo, multi-feel set of full-on ProTools drum sessions with song sections marked, drums separately tracked AND stereo mixed (sort of like Drum Drops on steroids).

Definitely a good idea, yet many of you with ears who tried Discrete Drums were less than ecstatic about the actual sound of the drums. So was the case with Val Garay. A couple weeks ago, Val showed up on my doorstep, cd in hand, anxious to get his demo on. He and Nic tenBroek did their own set of Discrete Drums, which they are calling Tracked Drums

Same idea, much better sounds. My personal ear talent owes a lot to Jim Marshall (if you get my drift) so a good sound has to be pretty obvious for me to understand what a great sound it is, and listening to Tracked Drums, it was absolutely obvious. The kicks are deep and full and I liken the snare to what happens to the sound of a Les Paul when doubled: thick, full, sharp. And for those of you who know Man Lee, these are, hands down, the best drums he's ever heard in his short life (he sat beside Val during the demo and listened intently to the work of a true professional).

Also, this set includes fills that have NOT been subjected to Beat Detective (as well as ones that have), to gain a more raw feel in the transitions. I don't think these are meant to replace the Joey's and Ginger's out there. And, since artist development demos seem to need to sound like finished albums lately, I can certainly perceive using Tracked Drums to create album budgets from development demos. Even artists doing mostly electronic music always use real drums in places, whether clean or messed up.
